Upcycle your old books with this quick and easy vintage-style rolled paper jar.
Last week I decided to tackle the task of cleaning out our seriously overflowing bookshelf. By the end of it, I had a small pile of books I had nothing to do with (mostly out-of-date school textbooks that wouldn’t be worth donating to charity).
Rather than throw the books in the recycling bin, I decided to hang on to a few of them to use in various DIY home decor/craft projects.
After brainstorming a few ideas, I decided to upcycle one of the books into a vintage-style rolled paper jar. Here’s a picture of the finished jar:
This DIY book page jar is really quick to make. All in all, it takes less than 20 minutes to make (time spent being an indecisive idiot about the exact placement of the jute twine included).
In addition to being a quick DIY home decor project, this vintage rolled bookpage jar is also pretty cheap to make. All you need is an old jar (I recycled the one of the jars I used in these 15 minute DIY Christmas jars), some jute twine, double-sided tape, and – of course – an old book. I had all of these supplies on hand, meaning I spent exactly $0 for this project. My cheap-ass self is doing a little happy dance. At least mentally. Because ew, exercise.

To make your rolled book page jar, you will need:
- An old book.
- A jar. I reused the jars from my 15 minute DIY Christmas jars. If you’re looking for a jar similar to the one I used, Amazon has a great range of jars with cork lids. If cork lids aren’t your thing, Target has a bunch of pretty jars.
- Jute twine.
- Double-sided tape. I experimented with using single-sided tape and glue. Regular tape will work in a pinch, but the end result won’t be as neat.
- A pen or marker (for rolling the paper).
- Lace ribbon. I just used some I had leftover from wrapping Christmas presents.
To begin, rip a page out of your book. Add three small pieces of double-sided tape, as below:
Grab your pen/marker/thing you can roll something around. Place it at the bottom edge of the paper, like so:
Slowly roll the paper up around the marker.
Once you reach the double-sided tape at the top, remove the backing paper from the tape. Roll the paper over the tape. Press lightly to stick the paper roll to the double-sided tape.
Grab a piece of jute twine. Loop it around your paper twice, then tie it off using a standard knot. With that, your first paper roll is complete!
Repeat the process until you’ve made enough paper rolls to fill your jar.
Once your paper rolls are complete, pop them in your jar and put the lid on.
Grab your lace ribbon and wrap it around the top of the jar. Use double-sided tape to stick the lace to the jar. You can also use a hot-glue gun for this step, but I wasn’t about to go to the effort of getting up off the couch when I had double-sided tape right next to me.
Finally, cut a long piece of jute twine. Wrap it around your jar several times, finishing with a small bow.
And with that, your DIY rolled paper jar is done! Here are a few more pictures of the finished jar:
